Prior to the protests and organization against a parking garage on Parcel C, Chinatown community members protested against the Tuft’s New England Medical Center’s building expansion into Chinatown, as the center’s continued development would have an adverse affect on and take space away from Chinatown residents.

This draft the need for additional facilities for community service agencies in the Chinatown area. This study was prepared by the Henderson Planning Group and was requested by the Chinatown/South Cove Neighborhood Council (CNC) and the Boston Redevelopment Authority. It includes a community needs assessment survey conducted by Tom Lun-Nap Chung, Ph.D.

This photograph was taken on a roll of film documenting the New England Medical Center’s campus and Parcel C in Chinatown. This mural was painted by David Fichter, co-designed by the artist Wen-ti Tsen, and the assistance of community volunteers in 1986. This text appears in the mural: “Justice for Asians” and “Housing!”
